On September 8, 2022, with just nine days' notice, Jack White announced a surprise performance in Chattanooga.
Traditionally, the creation of a gig poster is a time-consuming process. However, for this event, inspiration struck quick and we moved from concept to final art, and then to a printed poster, all within a day. The concept drew from the iconic 'SEE ROCK CITY' barns, a staple of Chattanooga's landscape and a deep-rooted symbol in the cultural heritage of the American South. These barns have been guiding travelers to the 'Rock City' attraction since the 1930s and represent a masterful blend of advertising and artistry.
Although I hadn't been asked to design a poster for this specific show, it was a creative challenge I couldn’t pass up—mirroring the ethos of Clark Byers, the original 'SEE ROCK CITY' sign painter, who famously said, 'I can't pass up a good roof.'
My goal was to create a poster that celebrated both Jack White and Chattanooga, crafting a piece that would become a cherished memento for local fans.
In addition to barns, 'SEE ROCK CITY' birdhouses are another icon of the area. I customized one to read 'SEE JACK WHITE.' This single edition birdhouse now hangs in my yard as a personal keepsake from the project.
This project stands as a testament to the dynamic fusion of music, design, and nostalgia — a convergence that creates lasting memories and embodies my passion for intertwining historical context with contemporary art.
